What is the RUAC, what is it for and how to obtain it in CDMX?

The RUAC ( Registro Único de Animales de Companion ), nicknamed the “CURP for pets”, has just come into force on April 1, 2024. Registration is mandatory : then, all dog and cat owners must process the unique registration key for their pet(s). But don't worry, registration is free , the process is very fast , and there is still no deadline set to have the RUAC for your best friend.

What is the purpose of pet registration?

The Animal Protection and Welfare Act aims to eradicate animal abuse in Mexico City, so AGATAN (Animal Care Agency) created a registry to provide greater protection to domestic animals. These measures seek to promote the dignified treatment of all pets in Mexico City by establishing a legal guardian for each companion animal, mostly dogs and cats.

The RUAC is designed to allow access to a support network in case of loss, theft, mistreatment, animal cruelty or health problems , as well as to deworming, vaccination and sterilization campaigns in the colonies, free of charge. In addition, you will receive medical attention at the Veterinary Hospital of Mexico City.

How to obtain the CURP for pets?

The entire process is done online . Prepare a photo of your dog or cat and its vaccination and sterilization certificate (if relevant) to add all the information that the platform will ask you for.

First of all, it is a matter of registering your pet's name , its physical characteristics (colour, length of fur), particular signs, etc.

1. Go to the official RUAC website in CDMX.

2. Register as an owner with your first name, last name, email and password.

3. Verify your account.

4. Enter your details as well as those of your pet.

5. Complete the process and download the Unique Registration Key.

From now on, you will be able to update your RUAC details if you change your address or adopt another pet . It is important to note that according to the law , the collar or chest strap of each pet must bear its name, the RUAC code, as well as the contact details of the responsible guardian .

They can be embroidered, engraved or inscribed on the fabric of the collar or harness, or even better on an identification plate , essential to ensure the safety of your pet at all times, especially if walking without a leash.

What happens if I don't get my dog or cat's RUAC?

A deadline for registering pets has not yet been published . However, the law provides for fines for non-compliance ranging from $2,279.97 to $3,365.67 Mexican pesos. According to article 65 of the recently published Animal Protection and Welfare Law, violators risk arrest within 24 to 36 hours in Mexico City.

So we advise you to go ahead and not wait to complete this procedure. It is quite short. When you have everything in order, do not forget to include the unique registration code on your dog or cat's identification tag . Does your pet already have one and does not have the RUAC code? Surely almost all owners in CDMX will experience the same thing next year.

At EPIC pets, we think of you: if you buy a new tag, we will offer to include the RUAC , along with your phone number. If you want us to add it to a tag you already bought with us , contact us here .
